Fan Content Policy

Make things. Share them. We want to read them.

THE SHORT VERSION

What this is

You are welcome to create and share free, non-commercial material set in or using the mechanics of Children of New Rome, provided you follow the guidelines below. This is a policy, not a legal contract, and it is designed to encourage rather than restrict.

If you want to do something that sits outside these lines — commercial work, a large licensed product, or a project that uses our trade dress — email us. We are small, we read every message, and we usually say yes.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Without asking permission

  • Adventures and settings. Write scenarios, gazetteers, dungeon keys, or entire campaigns set on the Byzantine frontier. Use our places, factions, and NPCs. Rename them if you prefer.
  • Homebrew and house rules. Publish hacks, alternate mechanics, conversions to other systems, or rules modules that plug into the core game.
  • Zines, blogs, and podcasts. Actual play reports, essays on the period, in-character letters, faction analyses — anything that gets people talking around the table.
  • Art and cartography. Maps, character portraits, handouts, and visual aids for your own table or for public sharing.
  • Tools and generators. Digital character generators, random tables, or GM dashboards that reference the game.

THE FEW RULES

Please keep to these

  • Keep it free. Fan content must be shared without payment, paywall, or subscription. Tip jars and “pay what you want” with a zero minimum are fine; anything that requires money to access is not covered by this policy.
  • Credit us. Include a line such as: “Uses Children of New Rome by Children of New Rome (tabletop.childrenofnewrome.com).” A link back is appreciated but not required.
  • Do not imply official endorsement. You may not use our logos, cover art, trade dress, or the exact layout of our books to make your work look like an official release. Your own branding and voice should be unmistakable.
  • Do not republish our text. You may quote short passages for review or commentary, but you may not reproduce full chapters, stat blocks, or proprietary mechanics verbatim in a way that replaces the need for our books.
  • Keep it civil. We reserve the right to ask for the removal of content that is hateful, discriminatory, or designed to harass.

ATTRIBUTION

How to credit

A simple credit line is enough. For example:

“This work uses the setting and mechanics of Children of New Rome by Children of New Rome. tabletop.childrenofnewrome.com”

If you are writing for a platform that supports tags (itch.io, DriveThruRPG, etc.), tag it Children of New Rome so people can find it.

COMMERCIAL WORK

If you want to sell it

This policy covers free, non-commercial work only. If you want to sell a product that uses our mechanics, setting, or branding — whether on itch.io, DriveThruRPG, or Kickstarter — you need a separate commercial licence. We are open to these and we do not charge unreasonable fees.

Email us with a short pitch and we will respond within a week.

THE FUTURE

SRD and open licence

We intend to release a System Reference Document (SRD) and a formal open licence in the future, once the core mechanics are final and the rulebook is in print. This Fan Content Policy is the bridge until then. Nothing in this page prevents us from publishing a more permissive licence later.

FINALLY

A note from us

The best marketing we can imagine is a table full of people arguing about whether the strategos of Amorium would have surrendered, or drawing a map of a cave monastery that never existed in the real sources, or writing a blog post about the price of mules in 838. If you do that, you are part of this project. We mean it.

This policy is maintained by Children of New Rome and may be updated from time to time. Last updated July 2026.
